Artist Statement
My work revolves around people. The scope of human behavior and interaction. I explore socio-political ideas while keeping a humanist sensibility at the core. I'm interested in the play between tension and release. This applies to both my technique as a painter and to the subjects I choose to explore.

My painting is informed by my background in experimental performance and film. The paintings' subjects are seen as characters. The panel as a production still to a unidentified larger work - deliberately theatrical - provocative, sometimes disturbing, often humourous. Specific moments filled with the tension of the moment just before and the moment just to come. Emotional reality is stressed within a surreal context. Housed within a style that plays with the tradition of classical portraiture, its formality is subverted into a new idea thatÕs modern and vibrant.

Working on "halo"
2007

I paint in oils - bold, graphic colours that push at the boundaries of realism. Juxaposing them with other media; chalk, pencil, bare wood, metal. IÕm obsessed with detail and painting flesh in a way that makes it seem alive - the skin transparent. Realism is used further to freeze a moment in time. But only sparingly - the eye is drawn to the faces, the eyes, the hands and then is swept away by the body gesture as the lines melt away to nothing but expressionistic line and colour. Tension and release.
